Providing the finest in Dixieland, big band swing, country and western, polkas and Latin music up and down California's Central Coast

The Mud Skippers is a three- to seven-piece band that plays not just good dance music but also a dynamic mix of high-spirited, toe-tapping, Dixieland, traditional jazz, big band swing, standards, polkas, Latin, ragtime, country and western, patriotic marches and more; in other words, fun  music.

The Mud Skippers have performed together for five years in local venues ranging from the Madonna Inn to the Mid-State Fair. We are typically featured at the following types of events: private parties, Mardi Gras, Oktoberfest, Cinco De Mayo, holiday celebrations, dinner shows, TGIFs, parades (marching band in the spirit of New Orleans street bands), Portuguese celebrations, BBQs, traditional New Orleans jazz funerals, breakfasts and brunches, pool parties, wedding receptions and more.

One unique aspect of the Mud Skippers is that our vocalists can sing in German, Spanish and French.

What is a Mudskipper?

YouTube video: Life of a Mudskipper

Mudskippers are members of the subfamily Oxudercinae (tribe Periophthalmini), within the family Gobiidae (Gobies). They are completely amphibious fish; using their pectoral fins to "walk" on land. Being amphibious, they are uniquely adapted to intertidal habitats, unlike most fish in such habitats, which survive the retreat of the tide by hiding under wet seaweed or in tidal pools. Mudskippers are quite active when out of water, feeding and interacting with one another. They are found in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions, including the Indo-Pacific and the Atlantic coast of Africa.

How did we decide on the name Mud Skippers?

"When we were first starting the band we were trying to come up with a name that was catchy and would likely be remembered, which was an important consideration for a start-up band.  One of the early members, no longer with the band, said, "How about The Mud Skippers?"  We thought at first it was some kind of Southern joke, since that's where the suggester was from -- the deep South.  But we had to admit it was unusual; even a bit catchy, and would probably be remembered by the public.  So here we are, years later, still named for that strange little amphibious fish none of the present band members has ever seen, The Mud Skippers!  We are betting you will remember us." -Jack Morrow
